Fun with Fidel

Privacy Policy

Addis Futures Lab, LLC ("AFL," "we," "our," or "us") develops and operates the Fun with Fidel application ("the App"). We are committed to protecting the privacy of all users, with particular attention to the safety of children. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices available to you.

This policy is designed to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) where applicable, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and the requirements of the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

1. About Our App

Fun with Fidel is an interactive learning application for the Ge'ez script (Fidel), serving children ages 4 and up, diaspora families, and adults reconnecting with Ethiopian script heritage. The App is designed for a general audience while implementing specific protections for younger users.

2. Age Screening

Upon first use, Fun with Fidel asks users to confirm their age category:

  • Under 13

  • 13 to 17

  • 18 and older

Users who identify as under 13 receive an experience with zero data collection. No analytics, device identifiers, or usage data are collected or transmitted for these users. No account creation is required for any age group.

3. Information We Collect

For users aged 13 and older:

We may collect limited, anonymized, non-personal data to maintain and improve the App, including:

  • App feature usage and interaction patterns (anonymized)

  • Device type and operating system version

  • App performance, stability, and crash data

We do NOT collect:

  • Names, email addresses, or other personally identifiable information

  • Precise or approximate geolocation data

  • Contact lists, photos, or camera/microphone access

  • Financial or payment information through the App (purchases are processed entirely through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store)

For users under 13:

We collect no data of any kind. The App operates entirely on-device for these users with no data transmission to our servers or any third party.

4. Third-Party Services

The App may use limited third-party services for basic functionality such as crash reporting or performance monitoring. Any such services are selected for their compliance with applicable privacy laws, including COPPA.

These services may collect limited technical data (such as device type, operating system, and crash logs) for users aged 13 and older only. No data is collected or transmitted by third-party services for users who identify as under 13.

We do not integrate any third-party advertising networks, social media SDKs, or behavioral tracking tools.

A current list of third-party services used in the App is available upon request by contacting us at the address below.

5. How We Use Information

For users aged 13 and older, we use the limited data described above to:

  • Monitor app stability and resolve technical issues

  • Understand general usage patterns to improve the learning experience

  • Ensure compatibility across devices and operating systems

We do not use collected data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to maintaining and improving the App.

6. Children's Privacy

Fun with Fidel is designed to be a safe, educational space. Our approach to children's privacy includes:

  • Zero data collection for users who identify as under 13

  • No behavioral tracking, profiling, or targeted content for any user

  • No advertising of any kind within the App

  • No social features, chat functions, or user-to-user communication

  • No account creation or login required

  • No in-app purchases (the App is a one-time paid download)

If we discover that data has been inadvertently collected from a child under 13, we will delete that data immediately.

7. Parental Rights

Parents and guardians have the right to:

  • Review any information that may have been collected in connection with their child's use of the App

  • Request correction or deletion of any such information

  • Refuse further collection or use of their child's information

  • Withdraw consent at any time

Because we do not collect data from users under 13, these rights will typically be confirmed through a verification that no data exists. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the information in Section 14.

8. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information to third parties.

We may share limited data only in the following circumstances:

  • With service providers who assist in app operations (such as crash reporting), under contractual obligations to protect data and use it solely for providing their services

  • When required by law, regulation, or legal process

  • To protect the rights, safety, or property of AFL, our users, or the public

We may share aggregated, fully anonymized data that cannot identify any individual user for research or educational purposes.

9. Data Retention

For users aged 13 and older, anonymized usage and performance data is retained only as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy. We periodically review and delete data that is no longer needed.

For users under 13, no data is retained because no data is collected.

If you request deletion of any data associated with your use of the App, we will process that request within 30 days.

10. Data Security

We implement technical and organizational measures to protect information, including encrypted data transmission, secure infrastructure, and access controls limiting who can view collected data.

No system is completely secure. While we take reasonable steps to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. In the event of a data breach affecting personal information, we will notify affected users in accordance with applicable law.

11. International Data Transfers

If you use the App outside the United States, limited anonymized data (for users aged 13 and older) may be transferred to and processed in the United States. Where applicable, we implement appropriate safeguards for international data transfers in compliance with GDPR and other relevant regulations.

12. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your data:

  • Access: Request a copy of any data we hold related to your use of the App

  • Correction: Request correction of inaccurate information

  • Deletion: Request deletion of your data

  • Portability: Request your data in a structured, commonly used format

  • Objection: Object to certain types of data processing

For users in the European Economic Area and United Kingdom: We process data under legitimate interest (maintaining and improving the App) and legal compliance. You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

For users in California: Under the CCPA, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request deletion, and opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information.

For users in African jurisdictions: We comply with applicable data protection laws in the countries where the App is available, including Ethiopia's relevant regulations.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the information in Section 14.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the App and posted on our website. The "Last Updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision.

Continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy for users aged 18 and older. For users under 18, parental or guardian review of policy changes is encouraged.
